3-2-1 Quick Pitch Event @ Memorial Stadium

From: Christensen, Gregg
Sent: Tuesday, August 9, 2016 1:35 PM
To: NDE NCE Career Field Leaders; NDE NCE Student Organization Leaders
Subject: 3-2-1 Quick Pitch Event @ Memorial Stadium

Based on feedback from a few of you (thank you!) who responded to the question regarding UNL’s Center for Entrepreneurship separating out a separate evening for high school and 2 year postsecondary on Wednesday, November 2nd, they have decided NOT to do that this year.  Instead, they will keep everything on November 3rd, (separate competition suites for high school, 2 year and 4 year postsecondary).

Wednesday evenings, coupled with the timing close to some of the CTSO fall regional conferences made November 2nd questionable.  At some point in the future, I’m going to try to host a conversation between the Eship Center and some of you to explore how/when they could best engage CTE students and CTSO members with this event and other activities they host.

That said, please still encourage your teachers/advisers in the Lincoln/Omaha/Southeast Nebraska general area to consider participating.  It’s an awesome event, set in the East Stadium Skybox Suites, and a great opportunity to network and for students to present a really simple quick pitch for a possible $1,000 prize.

8TH ANNUAL 3-2-1 QUICK PITCH COMPETITION

November 3, 2016 • Skybox Suites of Memorial Stadium

The 3-2-1 Quick Pitch Competition gives all Nebraska high school, 2 year college, and 4 year college students an opportunity to showcase their entrepreneurial, communication, and presentation skills through a short “quick pitch” proposal for a new business venture. Students will apply and then be invited to present their pitches, be evaluated, and receive feedback on the effectiveness of their pitch from a panel of entrepreneurially-minded experts from across Nebraska. Six cash prizes of $1,000 will be awarded. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

SkillsUSA & the Nebraska State Fair - Hotrods and Huskers

Advisors and Board members,

SkillsUSA Nebraska applied for and has received the second place award for Nebraska State Fair Cares.  We have a booth at the State Fair on Saturday and Sunday, September 27 – 28.  We receive many admission passes and parking passes for those people who are part of our booth for those days.

We are frantically trying to get a plan for this booth space & thought we would share our ideas -  we would like your ideas as well.

They provide a 20 x 20 tent, with a small area outside the tent.  We are looking at having as much Skills information as possible and then some handouts and freebies for those coming to our booth.  They would like for us to have some activity to draw people to the booth as patrons will not be coming to us to purchase items you might normally see at a fair – we are not selling mops or fried Oreo cookies!!

We would like to possibly have some skills demonstrations, just not sure what, when and how we do that.  We have discussed maybe something in Carpentry, Culinary, Commercial Baking, Robotics, Welding, Cosmetology, Promotional Bulletin Board, Chapter Display, Drone.

We could model the booth after the Carhartt booth at nationals, where the patrons get to spin a wheel to win a small giveaway prize.  But first, they would have to go through a small maze,  read several information segments about SkillsUSA, complete 6-8 questions.

We will have several of our banners hanging along with our red SkillsUSA table coverings.  I have been wanting a SkillsUSA flag so we will purchase one of those and fly it proudly.

We are also going to hold our Annual Foundation Scholarship Tailgate (Hot Rods and Huskers) along with a tour of Kuck’s AutoSport Museum in Lincoln on Saturday, October 15.  This is an away Husker game (Indiana), so it will be a bit different from the traditional home-night game we have experienced the past 4-5 years.  More on this later as we need to make decisions on costs and just what the tailgate should look like this year. Kuck’s will be from 10 – noon, then the tailgate starts after that.

This is not  your welcome back email!!!!

Casting Call for "Cutthroat Kitchen"

Dear SkillsUSA culinary advisors and students,

Yesterday, SkillsUSA received a phone call from Carter Palmer, casting producer for Food Network's Cutthroat Kitchen hosted by Alton Brown. Carter works for the casting company "Casting Duo" (http://castingduo.com/now-casting).

Cutthroat Kitchen is doing a special episode for high school seniors who are graduating this spring and who love to cook. They must be at least 18 years old by the filming dates (tentatively July 18 and 19, 2016).

The casting process would involve a short, fun Skype interview with Carter Palmer, filling out an application and sending over some beautiful photos of food prepared by the student and a photo of the student. From there, they may be interviewed by Skype. If chosen for the show, the students would be flown to Los Angeles (air fare and hotel will be taken care of).

To apply for the show, they ask interested students to sign up by going to:  https://cutthroatkitchen.castingcrane.com and Carter will make contact with them directly. Casting will finish up by May 20.

If you have questions or need additional information, contact Carter by telephone at 818-659-4052, ext. 6909 or by email to Carter.Palmer@gmail.com.

Here is some information about the show from Carter:

In each episode, four amazing chefs (in this case "high school seniors who love to cook") are each given $25,000 by the host, Alton Brown (Good Eats, Iron Chef America, etc.). The students would compete in three cooking challenges/rounds and are judged by a celebrity chef judge (regular judges are: Jet Tila, Simon Majumdar, and Antonia Lofaso).

*For each challenge/round, there’s an auction where you can purchase items to either benefit you in the challenge or items to sabotage other players! Sabotages might range from having to cook with different ingredients, cooking implements or methods, etc. Think of sabotages more like pranks, nothing mean-spirited!

(Examples of funny sabotages: cooking a steak dinner with nothing but vegetables, so you make the steak with your eggplant; making your entire meal in an easy-bake oven or on a camp stove; or making a Cuban sandwich using a cigar cutter.)

*After each challenge/round, a contestant is eliminated until there’s one contestant left standing who becomes the proud winner and takes home the money he or she has left!

All the best,

Jane

Construction Summer Camp

AGC has a Perkins Grant to fund two summer week-long day workshops for coming 9th-12th graders to learn about construction careers.  We have contracted with the staff at Construction Education staff at SCC-Milford to develop the curriculum and teach the workshops in June.   Due to the grant funding, students will be able to attend the week-long experience at no cost to them.  All they need to do is register, complete the forms, and cover the cost of getting to and from the campus each day.

Attached is the promotional piece for the event.  Could you please encourage your STS teachers to take a look and encourage interested students to register and attend.  We really want to encourage young women to attend.  Likewise, I think this is an excellent opportunity for younger high school students to “give construction a try” to see if they want to take more advanced courses in high school where offered.   Of course the limitation is attendees must be in daily commute distance from either Milford or Lincoln.

Thanks guys in advanced for doing you magic in helping to get the word out about this opportunity.  We’ve got about one more week to make this happen!!

SkillsUSA - Two NLSC items

Advisors,

Two more items pertaining to nationals:

1)      I realize that state conference has only been over for a short time, but if you already know your first place champion is not planning to attend nationals, we need to know that sooner than later.  I need to look up scores to make sure we will offer this national spot to the 2nd or 3rd place champion.  All of this takes time, so if you know they are not going, let us know.  We have heard from several school on this items and I want to thank those advisors for getting back to me so soon.  We have several schools that are ready to register their silver medalists for nationals.

2)       I have a school that might have some students interested in going to nationals as Courtesy Corp members, but the advisor is not able to attend nationals.  If you are not familiar with the National Courtesy Corps,  check out this link:  http://www.skillsusa.org/events-training/national-leadership-and-skills-conference/national-courtesy-corps/

If you are interested in being part of this group, please let me know.  Advisor Larry St. Hilaire from Omaha Bryan has taken kids for this the past couple of years.  You have to get to Louisville, but everything is paid once you get there.

Scholarships Offered to CNC National Competitors

NIMS and the Gene Haas Foundation (GHF), which provides scholarships to schools for students entering technical training programs, are partnering to provide scholarship funds directly to the near-future workforce. Scholarships will be given to select SkillsUSA students who represent some of the nation's top young talent in precision machining and metalworking.

The GHF-NIMS SkillsUSA Scholarship Program will award over $200,000 to students competing in three manufacturing events at the 52nd annual SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC) in Louisville, Ky., June 20-24. Competitors include high-school and college students from all 50 states who have won their SkillsUSA state competitions in CNC Technician, CNC Milling Specialist and CNC Turning Specialist.

Upon their arrival at NLSC, competitors will be eligible to receive a $1,000 scholarship award recognizing their success. Medalists at each of the three competitions at each level will receive awards in the following amounts: gold: $4,000; silver: $3,000; and bronze: $2,000.

The scholarship program is part of a larger partnership led by GHF and NIMS to help more students prepare for success in precision manufacturing careers by gaining industry-recognized credentials at high schools and colleges. GHF and NIMS have provided more than $1.8 million to schools and students since the program launched in 2014. As a result, more education programs are providing high-quality training, and more individuals are gaining the skills and credentials they need for success in the workplace.

NIMS (National Institute for Metalworking Skills) was formed in 1994 by metalworking trade associations. NIMS sets skills standards for the industry, certifies individual skills against the standards and accredits training programs that meet NIMS quality requirements.

Great Values for Your End-of-Year Budget Spending

Many school systems require instructors to expend all the funds in their consumable budgets before the end of the school year. If you have budget dollars remaining, consider using them for SkillsUSA educational resources. Materials such as Quotes to Results and RESOLUTE: Ethics at Work will make great additions to your classroom resource items. For SkillsUSA chapter resources, consider purchasing Jumpstart, Propel, Accelerate, Ignite or any of the Leveraging Your Leadership (LYL) Series books. The ultimate in chapter officer preparation is the LYL Series Officer Mega Package. Learn about these educational resources and a whole host of others by visiting the SkillsUSA Store at: www.skillsusa.org/store/index.html.

Support SkillsUSA Alumni for a Chance to Win a Harley

Foundation Awards HVACR Scholarships to National Competitors

The Rees Scholarship Foundation is excited to continue its close association with SkillsUSA by providing scholarships for all finalists in the national Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration competition. The foundation launched this effort in 2015 to support SkillsUSA's mission. Gold-, silver- and bronze-level HVACR prize winners will receive Rees scholarships for $2,000, $1,000 and $750 respectively, and each finalist will receive $500.

The Rees Scholarship Foundation was established in 2003 by the Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) to recognize deserving students pursuing careers as technicians in the HVACR and water heating industry. "The SkillsUSA conference is recognized industrywide as one of the best tools to attract young people to the trades and particularly HVACR and water heating," said Stephen Yurek, AHRI president and CEO. "We are proud to support this program and the students who already excel." Since its inception in 2003, the foundation has awarded nearly $440,000 to more than 250 deserving students.

For more information, please visit the Rees website at: www.Reesscholarship.org.

Scholarships Available for State Winners from mikeroweWORKS Foundation

The mikeroweWORKS Foundation, in partnership with SkillsUSA, is proud to offer a scholarship opportunity for SkillsUSA members who have competed and placed first in their state competition. These scholarship programs assist eligible students who are pursuing an education in a vocational or similar trade-related program. This year, the foundation's priority focus is on high-school and college/postsecondary students working toward careers in manufacturing, construction, automotive, engineering and STEM-related trades.

Awards are based on a student-written, one-page narrative describing the student's financial need for the scholarship, including the lack of school or community resources. Students may be nominated with a letter of recommendation written by their SkillsUSA advisor or state association director. Applications should be sent to SkillsUSA headquarters for review and determination. They must be received by Friday, May 27 (midnight EDT). The national headquarters will notify the winners the following week.

Skills - SLC updates

Advisors,

I have been somewhat quiet on this end, as it has been a crazy spring trying to prepare for SLC.  I am making this email in two parts, so maybe all of you will look it over.  If you are not attending state conference and you are receiving this email, you can delete right now, unless of course  you are curious as to what is happening with SLC.

1)      We have almost 1600 students and advisors attending SLC.  We will be using an overflow room for the Opening and Awards Sessions.  Next year this will not be an issue!  We will be doing some ushering to pack  the members in.  There will not be any saved seats this year so plan accordingly, except for State Officer parents and VIP coming to the session.  The opening session is open to only registered members who have received a name badge.  Everyone must wear their name badge to the Opening session.

2)      When you arrive, the DoubleTree will have a place to park your van or bus.  Holiday Inn has ground level parking.  It looks as though we will have shuttle buses running from the Holiday Inn Downtown to the Doubletree and back for the Opening and Awards Sessions.  This bus stop is located on the north of the DoubleTree on Capitol Street, accessible from the lower level.

3)      You may not be able to get into your sleeping rooms right when you show up at the hotel.  It all depends on how many guests they had the night before and how fast they can get the rooms cleaned.

4)      Conference registration will take place from 10:00 am – 1:30pm in the Flanagan Room on the 2nd/mezzanine level of the DoubleTree Downtown.  Please try to get your packet picked up during that time – it is not just a folder with paper in it.  Most of  you will receive your registration stuff in a large box and it will take some time to get things handed out to all members.  Those of you with 30- 50 kids,  this is a large task!!

5)      Shuttles will run only to the DoubleTree Downtown Hotel and the Holiday Inn Downtown Hotel.

6)      The Social on Thursday evening will be different from the survey results sent out to you last week.  We had to make some decisions early, so here is what is happening:

a.       If you would like to take your chapter members to a movie, by all means get that planned out.  It would  have just been a nightmare on elm street for us to organize this. If you have transportation, this activity would be doable.

b.      We have a Hypnotist contracted from 9:00 – 10:30pm.  This person regularly does bigtime shows  - Vegas. I think this will be a great activity for all!  This will take place in the ball room so everyone who wants to attend may do so.

c.       We have rented four PlayStations with large monitors.  The state officers may be organizing tournaments for Madden and maybe a basketball game.  That room will be set up from 8:30 – 11:45.  We will also utilize the TTPS room (lots of tables and chairs) for students to play card games.  We have state officers that would also like to plan a pitch tournament.

d.      Sorry, no dance this year!   There is an indoor swimming pool also.  The Holiday Inn really has a nice indoor water park!!

Skills - SLC 2

Advisors,

Next set of informative items:

1)      You should have all received the updated schedule.

a.       Leadership contests are on Wednesday evening.  There will be Job Interview and Prepared Speech (new this year) finals on Thursday evening at 6:30.  We hope those announcement will go out over Remind 101 or Guidebook.  We may just have to contact the advisors of the finalists – probably post the lists at venues on Thursday.  We will also interview for the finalists on the National t-shirt design on Thursday evening.

b.      Make sure your students know what time they have to be at contests on Thursday.  For the most part they all start at 8:00am and will end by 4:00pm.  We have some contests that half the registrants will compete in the am with the others coming in after lunch and finishing up by 4:00.  Others just have later starts – ECW has a 7:30 start time.

c.       On Thursday we have contests at the DoubleTree Hotel, Century Link, UNO – Peter Kiewit,  MCC Fort, MCC - ATC, MCC – ITC.  The bus schedule has been released and it will also be in your registration packet.

d.      State T-shirt designs and pins designs will be judge during the delegate session on Thursday this year, not during the advisor lunch.

e.      Advisor lunch is only for those advisors who paid registration to the conference.  I ask that you wear  your name badge the whole time you are at the conference, including lunch on Thursday.  We have a ton of new/newer advisors that really need to be able to connect a face to a name!  Thanks

f.        Lunch on Thursday – Your students will eat where they compete!  If they are not competing at all on Thursday, really a relatively small number, those members will eat at the DoubleTree Hotel.  Check for serving times of their Skills buffet.  Cori has decided on four quadrants at the century link where contestants will go for their box lunches.  If a contest is split, those competing in the morning will eat after they are done competing  - probably around noon.  If they compete starting at noonish, they will need to eat prior to starting the contest.  Contest coordinators will make decisions as to when they will break for lunch.

g.       Please try to stay on top of  your students about eating decent meals and staying hydrated!  They will be nervous and anxious throughout the three days.  They need to be drinking water.

h.      The NETA conference will be happening at Century Link also this year – same time as us!  Please let all or your staff members attending NETA to make time to walk through the Skills Floor on Thursday.  NETA has included us on their power point for announcements.   This is a great opportunity for your peers to see what skills is.  I have always said, it is hard to explain what our champions do, you just have to witness the conference to understand it!!

i.         More to come!

Skills- SLC 3

What?? You mean there is more??  Yes there is!!

1)      We are in need of help on some of our state only contests and this is my time to ask for assistance!!  Not sure why finding people for these contests is so difficult.

a.       Bridge Building – 10:00 Thursday morning at Century Link.  We could use 4-5 people to qualify the bridges and then test them with our Stress Analyzer.  There is a formula to follow – this is not a difficult contest but 3-4 people would make this a short order.

b.      Metric 500 – Ed Mills of Blair has agreed to coordinate this contest.  This will start around 10:00am on Thursday and we have some Dream It Do It members who are supposed to assist with this contest.  Not sure if I really think 3-4 of them will really show up to help – they are supposed to.  Maybe have 3-4 advisors/board members on standby.  We can leave it with the DIDI group at lunch time or close it down for lunch.

c.       Mousetrap Vehicles – Thursday evening at the DoubleTree – we need about 4 people to make this work and be done by 8:30pm.  This is a speed contest with a run through for qualifying in the tournament.  A bracket then needs to be set up to find our champions.  I would really like to be able to make up a bracket, but with all of our state only contests, we really do not have an idea how many will actually show to compete.  Registration says 41 total mousetrap vehicles, we hope to have at least ¾ of those show up.  Judges will need to set up the track( stored in Flanagan room) then break it down and take it back to Flanagan room.

d.      Research and Development – 3 teams of two.  This contest really needs one STEM minded person to judge these engineering marvels.

e.      Our judges for the National T-Shirt design are now not available on Thursday evening.  I am going to see how many actual entries (35 registered from 6 schools) we get and one of three things will happen.  If we don’t get many entries, which we have not received very many as of Sunday evening, we will have an interview process and I may ask two active advisors who do not have any entries to sit in on these interviews or we may just vote on these finalists at the advisor luncheon or we give this to the delegates to vote on also.  I have witnessed this t-shirt design contest at nationals and from what I have seen so far, only a couple have put any thought into the designs.  This is an interview on the national level and in order to get a fair shake at nationals, you need to really think about what your design means and how you came about the design.

f.        Nationals – There will not be a lot of time to ponder whether or not your Champion/s will go on to Louisville to compete June 20 – 24.  Our conference is one of the later conferences this year, that means nationals will be expecting our registrations about May 2.

a.       Conference registration is $150.00 per/person

b.      Hotel rates seem to have gone up this year – same hotel Hyatt Regency! S/D - $140 night, T/Q - $156/night.  NOT sure if taxes are  included in these prices or not.  I have not had time to communicate with our Hotel Representative, but I will have that information right after SLC.

c.       We  have again contracted with navigator for four buses.  We are going with 56 passenger buses this year and have been guaranteed to have nicer buses than last year.  I learned from some of the negotiations I did last year, cheaper is not necessary better.  I hope to have the four buses start from four different points again to accommodate where our Champions hail from.  Costs for the buses could range from $140/person to $180/person.  Schedules will be similar to last year.

g.       On Thursday Morning at SLC, from 9:00 am – 10:30 we will have a B/I VIP session at Century Link.  Several of our board members will be on hand to share with industry what we are all about.  Tim Lawrence will also be there to present and will be a great asset for us this year.  If you have a Business/Industry member you have invited to this conference, let them know about this session.  It will be held in the VIP Suite at the Century Link in the preconference area/entryway of Hall C.

h.      You and your students will be responsible for getting the Bridges/plans and Metric 500 vehicles/plans to the contest sites by 10:00am.  We will not be collecting them at registration.  Make sure you attach the ID sheet that is on the State Only contest rules to both of these items.
