Mid-America Leadership Conference 2015 Information

Mid-America Leadership Conference

October 29 – November 1, 2015
                              Columbus, Nebraska

What is it?

The Mid-America Leadership Conference is a leadership conference with training for State/ Local Officers and Advisors on how to run a local chapter.  Students and advisors will be divided into color chapters and they will run an entire year’s program in the 3 ½ days of the conference.  The students will be planning, implementing and completing community service projects, fundraisers, officer elections, newspaper articles, contests, completing secretary’s and treasurer’s notebooks, business and industry field trips, general sessions and all the necessary elements to have a successful chapter through the National Program of Work.  Students and Advisors will have many opportunities to network and interact with students/advisors from other states.  This may be the best Chapter and Officer Development Conference in the nation.

Who should attend?
The Mid-America Conference is open to state directors, state and local officers, advisors and students who want to become better leaders.  This conference is a must for new advisors.  Last year, nine states were represented from Regions 3, 4 & 5.  This conference is open to all states.

What does it cost?

Registration - $30.00
Sleeping Rooms - Single/Double $84.95 - Triple/Quad $84.95 – These prices include breakfast!
Meal Ticket -$100 - Covers all lunches, dinners, ice cream social and the Sunday banquet buffet.
The average cost per student for the entire conference (including rooms & meals) averages $250 plus the cost of your transportation.  Students may bring extra spending money for the fundraisers and social.

Process Driven Conference

The Mid-America Conference has been re-evaluated and changed to make the training more process driven than results driven.  If you have been to the Mid-America Conference before, you will want to come back and see the changes.  If you have never attended before, you are in for a wonderful experience. Pretty intense – don’t bring your golf clubs!!  We have added alumni training to this conference.  Bring your Alumni representative along for training.

Where is this Conference held at?
Mid-America is held in Columbus, NE at the Ramada Columbus and River’s Edge Convention Center.  This conference (originally Region IV – VICA Leadership Conference) has been existence since 1977 and originated in Kearney, NE.  Mid-Am has been hosted by Columbus and the New World Inn/Ramada Columbus River’s Edge Conference Center for the past 37 years.

Registration

Registration will open on September 24, 2015 and more information will come out on that date.

SkillsUSA Fall Leadership Conference

Last minute items/reminders!!

1)      Dress – Dress for this conference is usual school attire.  Students must wear long pants (jeans would be good), closed toe/heel shoes (athletic shoes would be good).  Each registrant will receive a conference t-shirt.

2)      Industry Tours – Almost everyone received their first pick on industry tours.  There will be several construction picks that will have to be moved to 2nd tour pick.  We had over 100 people pick the Beckenhauer Construction Tour.  There will be a change in this tour.  Those who we put down for the AM tour, will actually be riding a MotorCoach to Wayne State College to tour a project there.  The afternoon group  will walk to the dorms that are being constructed by Kingery Construction on the NECC campus.  We will have hard hats and safety green t-shirts for them to wear on both tours.  They do not get to keep these green shirts or hard hats.    I guess they do not need safety glasses for these two tours - all construction will stop during the tours.

3)      Safety items – Safety glasses will be worn on the EBM tour, so if possible, your students in those tours could bring safety glasses.  They will have some, just not sure how many pair they will have.  I doubt if they will need safety glasses for the Faith Health Regional tour or the Detailing Center.  Not sure about Utility Line!

4)      It looks as though it will be a nice day on Monday, so we pray for no weather conditions that will affect the tours.  Utility Line tours will have to walk several blocks to that campus.

5)      The NUCOR cold finish, steel mill and Vulcraft tours will stay at the Lifetime Learning Center and those members will see video coverage of those processes.  After we decided on Norfolk and visited about the tours, we found out that anyone touring these three facilities needs to be 18 years of age.  Not sure just how many Seniors are 18 by September, so this is what we came up with.  I think this will be a great experience for the kids and the presenters will be able to visit with all members about what it takes to work in their facilities.  I personally have not been on tours of those facilities and I am thinking maybe down the road we need to schedule advisor training in Norfolk and tour the mills.  Anyone interested?
